Blogging

Blogging is hard. I forget to do it.

So let’s see. Spring is happening—cleaning, enjoying the air, enjoying the light. I’m looking for jobs, but also thinking about how feasible it would be to freelance. The issue is finding enough work, as always. But I think I can do it. If anyone wants web apps or other things developed, hey, I’m game.

And I dance, and I sing. I don’t play enough music. I see friends, and I plan a trip to Ireland in May. That’ll be good. I look forward to seeing friends. I’ve been contemplating the reduction in my wanderlust. I think it’s basically that I don’t want to go anywhere but These Isles, and maybe Canada. I need North. I don’t want to go to these warm places where the air is full of spices. I want to go places where the wind whips over the North Atlantic and the light is clear and silver, and then the sky is filled with slugging grey clouds and the air is filled with drizzle.

And my thoughts, my mental life? Awakening from hibernation. Thinking about what I can do that is useful to the world, and interesting to me. Wondering how making a living fits into that.

Old School Ties

I am here at Swarthmore, doing some work for Professor K. David Harrison.  It’s fun work, and going well—which is always profoundly satisfying when dealing with programming—but that’s not quite what I’m thinking about.  More interesting to me is that this is the first time I’ve been back on campus not explicitly for a social visit.  In fact, the campus is nearly void of people I know, or at least seems so, after the social busyness of senior year and the fact that every visit in this past year has been filled with other people from my year visiting too, and all of our various friends in 2009 being on campus.  I know relatively few people in 2010.

It’s interesting.  Kinda satisfying.  There are things I like about this place independent of the people, but I can also feel free from it.  I will mull over these thoughts more.  Unsure of them yet.

Dude…

Things I love about working here: boss A comes back from a few weeks vacation, and says that things went fine, he just got back to find the airline lost one of his bags, and his car is missing.*  Boss B says “I’m getting you a copy of Dude, Where’s my Car?.”

* It’s OK; his car was just towed from the garage it was in.  He’s remarkably sanguine about the whole thing.  Perhaps spending a few weeks in Cyprus seeing family and friends has him nice and relaxed?

Brain Dump

I finally finished Silas Marner; pleasantly written, but thin.  Not much there there.

I made great spanakopita this weekend, and biked, and hiked, and played frisbee.  I was productive, too—I achieved in 2 hours what would have likely taken me a day to a day and a half had I been in the office.  This is consistent.

I was sent this link, which made my day.

I played concertina, I sang.  I began to learn a new song, Farewell to Nova Scotia.

And yet, I still feel the pull of the East as strong as ever.
